Pros
Carpet grass is a warm season, creeping, perennial grass that grows well on wet, poor soils and in shady areas where most others will not grow. It does best in damp, sandy soils.
Carpet grass is coarse bladed and makes a dense turf. It is as cold tolerant as Centipede.
Carpet grass is a native grass to the interior Gulf states and similar tropical climates. Weeds and Bermuda grass can be crowded out by its thick growth.
Carpet grass is a good grass for erosion control and is a low maintenance grass on low fertility soils and can thrive if not mown without the addition of fertilizers.
Ideal for shadier, low, damp areas, carpet grass withstands higher traffic than many others. Carpet grass is sturdy and holds up well to foot traffic and pets.
Cons
Carpetgrass is shallow rooted and sensitive to water needs. It is not drought tolerant.
Carpetgrass also is known for its rapid seedhead development and needs mowing regularly to prevent unsightly seeding. It also can be invasive, getting into beds and other areas where it is not wanted. Once established, it may not be easy to get rid of.
The color and texture of carpetgrass are not considered to be especially attractive. The blades are coarse and the color is a lighter green than other varieties of turfgrass.
