Bermuda Grass
Pros
Bermuda is adaptable to many soil conditions and makes a good choice for
full sun areas. It is tolerant of drought and
wear. Easily established from seed, it is an excellent choice for Columbia area lawns. Fast-growing and easily established, one plant can cover an area of 3 square yards in just 150 days after germinating.
Bermuda grass is light grey-green in color. Bermuda grass produces short, fine blades of grass.
Bermuda is a good choice for lawns that need to stand up to a lot of abuse such as pets and children. It wears well and repairs itself easily. This is the variety of grass most used by golf courses. It is highly drought-tolerant, able to grow roots as long as 50 inches or more to seek water deeper in the soil.
Bermuda is a warm season grass that will go dormant in the winter and green up again in the spring.
Cons
Bermuda is a vigorous grower and can get into flower beds if not controlled. Few herbicides are effective against it.
The grey-green color of Bermuda grass is not as desirable as other species of turfgrasses.
